You know that wonderful feeling when you begin reading and find yourself transported to someplace new? Dìlseachd - A Stolen Crown gave me that feeling. The plot was action packed, the characters were constantly growing, and the scenery was immersive. If you are a fan of Celtic historical fiction, you won't want to miss out on this book!

FIONA McCurragh reined in her horse and paused at the top of the rolling hillside, looking out over the treeless glen. A misting rain fell from the clouded heavens, hiding Tor-na-Cruithne in the distance behind a silver veil. The rain was as soft as snow—though not as cold—and the fitful wind tossed Fiona’s flaming curls about, carrying with it a hint of the bygone summer.

I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book with more beautiful descriptions. Whether writing about a raging battle, a peaceful cottage or a chilling castle, Cheyenne masterfully sets the scene. The descriptive writing is phenomenal. There are so many vivid pictures, fully immersing us in the sounds and sights of the Scottish highlands and lowlands.

Fiona is a young princess battling fear, self-doubt, loss and well as many physical enemies! I enjoyed watching her grow into her role, and learn to accept and trust the support of those around her.

Angus often surprised me, with his many skills and complex personality. His family was a joy to read about, especially Malcolm - whose banter added some humour to the often sober plot. Rhiada was a wonderful character, an important mentor for Fiona.

The villains were shudder-inducing, I loved to hate them. They had human motives though, and we were given opportunities to see that.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Dìlseachd. I would recommend it for fans of historical fiction, especially Celtic fiction. If you are looking for a book about loyalty, freedom, loss and hope - this is the book for you! There are some battle sequences, younger readers should keep that in mind.
